Color coded safety system

When you are out within your community or visiting somewhere else, how aware are you of your surroundings? This is a discussion that has already been pondered and written about by not just security professionals, but also by several law enforcement agencies.
Recently I read an article titled, “The Color Code of Awareness: Developing a Combat Mindset” (http://tacticalintelligence.net/blog/the-color-code-of-awareness.htm). This article describes a mental awareness that is taught to “special agents, soldiers and law enforcement alike”. It is this mindset that creates a sense of awareness to a person’s surroundings, so that they may be able to identify and react to a given situation (if need be) .
According to the article “The Color Code of Awareness”, Jeff Cooper (Ltc.) of The United States Marine Corps states that the awareness of a person’s surroundings can be defined by a color coded system (white, yellow, orange and red).
According to Cooper, condition white is when people “are completely oblivious to their surroundings”. In a world where cell phones put text messages and communication at the hands of almost every citizen, this communication drops every user’s awareness level. If you are constantly in public with your cell phone out and your head down (and unaware) while sending or receiving a text, you are a part of what Cooper calls “the Unaware Masses”. This is a very dangerous condition to be in.
Yellow is much different than white in so much that in the yellow condition you are continually taking mental notes of things you see. In yellow you are walking with your head up while continually scanning the area around you and where you are heading. In this condition you are not looking for trouble, yet you are “relaxed and alert”. If potential danger presents itself you are prepared to act.
Condition orange is the sister to condition yellow, whereas, in order to enter condition orange, something (or someone) must present a potential danger. According to “Developing a Combat Mindset” “The only real difference between the orange and the yellow state is that you now have a specific point of focus”, basically meaning a potential threat has presented itself!
Once you have noticed a potential danger (and entered condition orange), in order to determine a potential dangers intention, you must perform some type of evasive maneuver, so that you can determine the threat’s intention (is this an actual threat or not). If while performing an evasive maneuver the possible threat does not break off (and continues toward you), at this point you must create a tactical plan, and prepare to be engaged (at which point you enter condition red).
Once in condition red you have determined that a threat is real and you are about to be engaged.  The main focus of condition red, according to “The Combat Mindset” is that “you have determined that a threat is real and you are ready to act.
So the next time you are in public, be aware of your condition. Am I unaware of what is going on around me, or am I mentally aware of the possible threats that surround me.

STAY SAFE!!!

Security of your personal belongings while out on the town

I was on University of New Mexico campus the other day, walking out of the Zimmerman Library, when I overheard two younger female students engrossed in a conversation about exploits from a past night’s venture on the town. So as not to misquote the students,  I will not attempt to recreate this discussion I overheard. In short, what these two students were discussing was how a friend went to a local nightclub and had his wallet pick pocketed from his back pocket.
As I crossed campus I began to think about how easy it is to completely interrupt any chance of enjoying a night out because someone failed to follow one simple step to protect their money while out for a night of fun.

If you are a female, the concept of how to keep your money safe is pretty simple. You carry a purse!  Yet remember, just because you have a cool way to carry your things and look great doing it, does not mean that security is no longer a problem.
I can’t say how many times I have been out and seen a girl with her purse thrown over her shoulder as she strolls down the sidewalk. Just because you are wearing a purse does not mean you should lazily dangle your purse off of your right or left shoulder as merely a fashion statement, but wear it strapped diagonally across your body. By changing the way you carry your purse, you eliminate the chance that a casual passerby can quickly grab it off of your shoulder, resulting in a futile foot race that puts the odds in the thief’s favor. Granted, I have heard responses such as “If I wear my purse across my chest, is uncomfortable”, or “it will wrinkle my clothes.” I am not going to argue either one of these points as I can understand these points are important. Yet  ladies, you need to ask yourself one question: “Which is more important to me tonight, protecting my purse and its contents or just looking good”?

-Remember, you can do both-
Now for the gentleman. Things can be just as dangerous as they are for the ladies. When guys go out, all of our important necessities (credit cards, identification and cash) are kept in our wallet, our version of the purse. If our wallet is stolen during your nightly outing, your livelihood will also be affected, and your identity potentially destroyed in the process, no different than a stolen purse!
Before you leave the house, or before going to get a drink at the bar, remove your cash from your wallet and put it in either one of your front pockets. This does one of two things: first, it allows you the funds to get a cab if your wallet is in fact stolen, and second, it places your cash someplace that no one has access to without your definite knowledge. Not to mention, like wearing a purse across the torso, putting your entire wallet in your front pocket will make it extremely difficult for a pick pocket to snatch your fun and ruin your evening.

Ladies, sling it across your body! Men, put it up front, and leave the thief behind!
